The Well-Trained Mind Academy is seeking a part-time Chemistry instructor to teach live, online sections of Advanced Placement high school chemistry.  

Interested application may apply for one, or both, positions: 

• Taking over AP Chemistry for the fourth quarter of this academic year, and
  • The instructor will take over our current AP Chemistry lecture and lab starting Monday, March 17, and finishing up the school year in May.
• Teaching for the full next academic year (2025-2025).
  • The instructor will offer one section of AP Chemistry for the 2025-2026  school year and one lab section.  

Position Description

Our science programs use a classical approach to education. Instructors should be comfortable using socratic discussion in classes and allowing students to experiment with methods of solving problems. 

AP Chemistry meets twice a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes (three contact hours) and the lab meets once a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The AP Chemistry classes for the 2024-25 school year that we are hiring a long-term substitute for are: 

• AP Chemistry Lecture: Mon/Wed 2-3:15 pm (Eastern)
• AP Chemistry Lab: Fri 2-3:15 pm (Eastern)

The AP Chemistry classes for the 2025-26 school year will be scheduled during regular school hours (Eastern Time Zone in the US). 

Requirements

• Follow course schedule and pacing
• Plan engaging activities that support student learning
• Encourage interaction between students
• Provide effective live instruction, including making learning goals clear to students and using appropriate instructional techniques
• Keep the learning environment positive. Outside material brought into the class is  conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
• Maintain course pacing and meet the standards outlined for the course, so that students meet the learning objectives for the units.
• Provide clear and actionable feedback on all assignments in a timely manner.
• Assists students in preparing for the AP Chemistry exam by providing instruction on registering for the exam as well as utilizing strategies and materials suggested by the College Board to familiarize students with the test format. 

Classes are taught live using Blackboard Collaborate. 

All classes are offered during regular business hours in the Eastern Time Zone. The position requires reliable high-speed internet. 

Instructors for the full-academic year position must reside in the following states and territories of the United States: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry or a related field
• Comfortable using Google Drive
• Experience using conferencing software in an educational setting
• Can comfortably work using a screen for several hours in a row
• Ability to balance several tasks at once (delivering lessons while also managing chat, addressing student behavior in real time, ability to answer questions in real time)
• Engaging presentation style, with ability to monitor student engagement and interest 

Preferred Qualifications

• High school teaching experience (in a classroom and/or a homeschool setting.)
• Experience with Blackboard, Canvas, or another LMS
• Experience teaching in a virtual setting

Compensation

Long-term Substitute Compensation:

Compensation is $1,330 for AP Chemistry Lecture and $1,015 for AP Chemistry Lab for the period starting March 17, 2025 through the end of the academic year. This compensation includes preparing for and teaching the live sessions, grading student work, and all related email communication.

Academy-year Compensation:

Compensation is $6650 for AP Chemistry Lecture and $5075 for AP Chemistry Lab for the academic year.  (Our academic year consists of two 17 week semesters; with each semester including 16 weeks of instruction, and one exam week.) This compensation includes preparing for and teaching the live sessions, grading student work, and all related email communication.
